My First Foundation And Why I Stuck to It

My very first foundation when I was still starting my experiment with makeup was the Maybelline Aqua Gel Foundation. Being such, it holds a special place in my heart especially since it has never failed me. Thank God that although I knew nothing about cosmetics then, this has never given me any horrible foundation moments. (Think, horridly ghostly face in flash photography!) For that, I am forever grateful!

Why I chose this one in particular among the multitude of brands available? Several reasons and here are some of them:

1) It was recommended to me by one of my closest friends. She and her sister swear by it so she was quick to suggest this when I asked her for advice.

2) Despite it being of good quality, it was affordable (less than PHP500) and fit my student budget to a T.

3) I love Maybelline as a brand because I was following their hip campaigns with several top models.

Now on to the product!

This foundation has a water-based formula making it perfect for normal to dry skin. I personally think that it provides light to medium coverage, but at the same time, it’s also  buildable so you can use a bit more if you need extra coverage.

Meanwhile, the finish sits somewhere in between matte and luminous. Better be ready with loose powder since I won’t guarantee that your face will remain matte throughout the day. Some oiliness is to expected ESPECIALLY if you have combination to oily skin.

My particular shade, by the way, is in natural beige, which blends very well with my skin tone.

I’m sharing with you a photo of mine when I was a freshman at university and a newbie at makeup.

It has been five years since then and this product still serves me well.

A bit of warning though. Be careful when squeezing the product out of the container. Sometimes, it may unexpectedly squirt out all over the place leaving your dress with foundation stains! This has happened to me a few times already. In addition, be sure to spread this fast once it’s on as it dries quite quickly. 🙂

I’m giving Maybelline Aqua Gel Foundation two thumbs up for being such a trusty newbie foundation and for never letting me down throughout the years. I think I have outgrown this product for now but it will always have a special place in my makeup hall of fame.

  1. hi mitch, reading your recent post.. can you feature a perfect makeup brand for filipino men… kinda vain but it will help in some ocassions.. here is something that i can share, most of us are like having thick foundation on our face during weddings.. ending up worst fotos caught in camera.. haha! well, i guess you’re the guru here perhaps you can help?

    1. Hi Nick! 🙂

I don’t really believe in men wearing thick makeup because there is a huge tendency for it to look unnatural. 🙂 Perhaps the focus should really be on skin care so that only a little makeup will be needed to enhance one’s look. Since I’m not really an expert on skin care products for men, perhaps you can check Jim Chapman’s channel on youtube:

Even though I’m a girl, I do watch most of his videos and I find his advice very helpful. He does reviews on various products for men including makeup. In fact, he did a tutorial with his makeup artist sister on how to conceal blemishes for men:

I believe all a man needs is a bit of concealer and lip balm. 😉 If you must really use a product to even out the skin tone on your face, I suggest using a tinted moisturizer instead since it looks more natural. I’m using Balm Shelter at the moment:

Lastly, here’s another link to a makeup tutorial for guys:

Sorry my reply’s so long! 🙂
