Singapore Series: Best Kept Secrets

No one knows Singapore better than the locals who have actually spent most of their lives there. They know the country’s best kept secrets, especially those not found in guide books.

Hence, during our stay there, we were very lucky to have Tommy, my cousin Andy’s friend, guide us around town. Through him, we found some foodie treasures serving truly delicious dishes that everyone ought to try.

Best Kept Secret 1: House of Seafood at Bedok

This place started as a small restaurant selling arguably the best chili crabs in the country. As word spread about it, they had more reason to expand thus allowing them to serve their to-die-for specialty to more people.

Despite the restaurant’sΒ growing popularity, it remains casual and cozy. This provides the perfect atmosphere to encourage one to enjoy the hearty meal without any inhibitions or pretensions.Β Because surely, there’s no other way to properly eat this 1.5 kilograms-worth of crab than to use one’s bare hands.This fleshy piece of heaven is appropriately swimming in chili sauce, which, in itself, is enough to bring joy. However, for those who want something to go with it, there’s another must-try that’s perfect with the sauce.

Take one of these deep-fried buns and dip it right into the plateful of chili crab sauce. Savor the mix of flavors as it invades the mouth. There’s no going back after the first bite. Expect to crave for more.

For those who don’t like too much flavor on their food, this other option will work just as well. It’s crab steamed with egg. With this dish, the fresh crab meat is the highlight.

At the end of the day, whichever option one takes, both are, as KFC puts it, finger-lickin’ good!

Of course, that wasn’t all there was to the meal. We also had some other dishes to complement the crab.Starting with this crab soup to whet our appetites for crab.

Fried string beans, anyone?

To sweeten the meal, this rose-flavored shake. A first for me but it’s surprisingly good!

Best Kept Secret 2: Sweechoon

After hours and hours of walking around Mustafa, a huge mall in the Indian side of town, Tommy thought that it was a good idea to have a quick supper before going home. He led us to this side street where Sweechoon was located. From the amount of people eating there, I would think that it was popular among the locals, especially since it was almost 3 AM then.

There, we ordered a selection of dimsum including some HakawΒ (shrimp dumpling) and Xiao Long Bao (soup dumpling). I found the Xiao Long Bao exceptional. πŸ™‚

We also had some century egg congee. I love century eggs!Β 

And… another first for me – Bean curd drink. It’s like drinking liquefied taho.

Lastly, for dessert, we got this chilled longgan. I forgot what it’s called exactly.

We ended the meal completely satisfied and happy. Needless to say, it was a lovely way to end the night.

Over-all, I think my aunt and I fulfilled our objective of eating the best food in town. Looking at the photos above are enough to make me salivate. Thinking about the actual experience of eating these makes me want to pack up my bags and go back to Singapore. I can sincerely say that this was one of the best food adventures I’ve ever had. πŸ™‚

  1. Yummy Crabs! I like the steamed version and those dumplings look really good! I’m glad we ate dumplings and crab meat last week so I’m not crazing as much after reading this post. πŸ™‚

  2. im getting hungry here, maybe the chili crabs is really popular in SG bec when i visited a friend she made the same dish for us…yummy!

    and i also ate a lot of dimsum there!


  3. i’m not adventurous when it comes to food so when we went there, we always go to fastfood but if ever i will have a chance to go back in singapore, i will try their crabs.


    1. I think they also have the rose flavored shake sa Orchard Road sa Mega Mall. Haven’t tried it yet so I’m not sure if it’s jsut as good πŸ˜€


  4. Chili food is one of my favorite .i used to cook it back in Qatar ,a country with lots of freshly catch sea food .it is cheap and you can but it right by the sea port or at any supermarket .one thing i miss in the US.
