Goodbye Acne: Round One

Back acne is one of my oldest enemy. I don’t know how or why I get them. They’ve just been there ever since I hit puberty. I guess I should finally believe – after much denial – that these are the result of my genes. Zits will eternally be popping out of my back because that’s how I’m built. Boo!

My only defense against them then is to use products that will control their appearance. I’ve been told that unless I ingest some expensive chemicals regularly, I shall never be spot-free. So, for those of you who suffer the same problems, I thought I’d share the products I use.

Maintenance: The Body Shop Tea Tree Body Wash

Tea tree oil, extracted from the leaves of the Narrow-Leaved Tea Tree native to Australia, is proven to have several medicinal properties such as antiseptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. In more recent years, its role in the skin care industry has been established, especially for products against acne.

A 5 percent concentration of tea tree oil, for instance, is said to be comparable to benzoyl peroxide (another compound popularly acne treatment) of the same concentration. Tea tree oil, however, works much slower.

This body wash was recommended to me by a friend after I told her about my problem. I use this everyday as it promises to provide “all-over cleansing to help remove impurities [leaving the skin] looking clearer, and feeling refreshed and invigorated.” With regular use, it also helps “maintain clearer, blemish-free skin.”

And in terms of its promises, it does deliver. I do feel refreshed after washing. It almost has a minty feel to it. Also, I did notice that since I started to use this, I do not get as much acne as I used to do. Some still come out when it’s that particular time of the month but that can’t be helped.

Good pay-off for the price (PHP400+ for a 250ml bottle), especially it lasts me for months.

Everyday Treatment: Dr. Kaufmann Medicated Sulfur Soap

Like Tea Tree Oil, Sulfur is used in dermatology for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is helps thin the skin around abnormal bumps on the skin (like warts) to help it shed off faster. Zinc oxide, on the other hand, is effective in healing wounds and rashes. Combined, these elements are an effective agent for clearing up acne.

Dr. Kaufmann’s medicated soap is intended for daily use. Each 100g soap is said to contain 2g of sulfur and 750mg of zinc oxide. Just cover the body with lather and leave for 1 to 2 minutes. Doing so can help dry up pimples and prevent blackheads, scabies, dandruff, lice, sores, and rough, oily skin.

This, with the Tea Tree body wash, did help my skin be much clearer though again, not completely pimple-free (because that is quite impossible for me!).  It retails at only PHP35-45 (forgot the exact price) so it’s very affordable. One bar lasts me more or less a month.

Spot Treatment: Body Shop Tea Tree Oil

This product by The Body Shop is made from 15% Tea Trea Oil. At this percentage, it is good for gentle acne control. I use this to apply directly on my spots. It causes my zits to “mature” faster (as opposed to just leaving it without medication) and heal. The effect, however, is not immediate. It might take a few days for the zit to be gone especially if it’s on the body. Don’t get impatient and just leave it to work its magic. I noticed, however, that the formula works faster on facial acne. 🙂

Something like Panoxyl might work faster but this is a much gentler formula. It doesn’t cause the skin to burn and it’s made from organic, Community Trade Tea Tree leaves.

The product is quite pricey at PHP495 per 10ml bottle but again, it will last long because it’s not intended for daily use anyway and a small drop is enough for one spot.

I do recommend these products but I cannot guarantee that these will have the same effect on other people. Different people have different levels of skin sensitivity and conditions. It’s still best to consult the dermatologist especially for severe acne problems. However, do give these products a try if you want and let me know how these work on you.

Part Two shall be coming in the next few weeks. Thanks for reading! xxx

  1. Hi Mich! Have you tried All Organics? They have tea tree and aloe vera bath soap as well as tea tree essential oil for spot treatments. I haven’t tried them but I use their honey shampoo and their lemongrass toner and they’re effective and affordable. 🙂

    1. Ching! 😀 Nope haven’t tried them yet! Where are they located? I’ll drop by and try their soaps if they’re more affordable than body shop hehe 😛

  2. mich, you should try sastid soap. it’s a mix of sulphur and salicylic acid. the perfect combo for stubborn acne. There’s also that 2% salicylic acid that they sell in grocery stores. The one that comes in clear glass bottles. ( I forgot the brand as mine had already dried out and i had to throw it away). They work great for back acne. I have been using for a long time now and they give fast results during my break outs. 🙂

    1. The Dr. Kaufmann soap might help but I’m not entirely sure. It’s best if you consult a dermatologist. 🙂

  3. i love this page 😀
i once had this pimple infested face, and i tried so many treatments.,. luckily theres one.,

“MyDerm medicated sulfur soap” which really works for me 🙂

  4. miss mich, i’m just 15 years old and i’m having a problem on my face.. i had so many pimples in my both cheeks. i’d like to know if the kraufmann zinc oxide soap can help remove these embarrassing and annoying pimples?? is it really effective?

    1. The zinc oxide soap worked on my body but it might be too harsh for your face. For my face, I use Pond’s antibacterial facial scrub (green), Pond’s Anti acne toner (blue), plus Ilog Maria Facial Oil which is made of honey and can heal spots. I also use Duac (can be bought from Mercury Drugstore) to put directly on the pimples to dry them out. 🙂

      1. what’s ilog maria facial oil for? can’t i just use ponds facial scrub and toner, Miss Mich? Can it help remove my pimples by just using those two?
